Let the Light In.

If you have a garden, you know it’s the season to be putting seeds in the earth for future sprouting. There is a natural urge to emerge from the dark and into the light of the Spring.

Here in northern Arizona, it’s the time of year when one day it feels like summer and the next it feels like winter. While I quizzically consider how to dress myself in these classic spring days of fluctuating temperatures, this is the time when the snap and sugar pea seeds I planted weeks ago are happiest. I tend to bundle up in layers in the morning only to peel them off by noon and then add them all back on for the evening crispness.

Spring is the kapha season. It’s the season of the water and earth elements. Our blood becomes heavy and needs bitter flavor to help break down the fat stored from the winter as it craves to be eliminated and move through the system to experience ultimate lightness, levity, and clarity through the approaching summer months.

Like mine, your body might not be totally sure how to regulate to the shifting temperatures, so honoring the changing of seasons with simple diet and lifestyle choices can make a huge difference. Knowing that mucus and allergies are a sign of excess kapha can help us make choices to get the blood moving. Fat cells start to automatically crave a biochemical release. As long as we are listening, we can align our daily rhythms.

Consider increasing bitter flavor, arugula, dandelion, turmeric, and ginger and avoiding heavy, oily, sweet, and salty foods. Eat, blend, drink, and take in the sunshine in all its forms during this transition. When we nourish ourselves with optimal sunshine, hydration, and movement, we sprout and blossom in the same way the seeds we planted in our gardens do because we have provided ourselves with the ideal conditions to thrive.

Hang it on your fridge as a reminder of a few simple approaches to align with the season.

How are you going to “let the light in”?
What does lightness feel like in your body?
Do you crave mental clarity? What is that like?
How might you move about the world with greater levity in your heart?
How about laughing more?

Let the Light In.

Not only are the days getting longer and there is more actual LIGHT in the 24-hour cycle, but when we listen deeply there is likely a deep craving, a kind of mental clarity, spiritual levity, and physical lightness as we exit the winter months. Even if you are dancing between your tank top and sweatshirt, consider how you can lighten up this season.
